On building the concept once, learning hard, and building it again better

There is a Shalamar song from 1979 called Second Time Around, written by Leon Sylvers III and William Shelby. If you do not know it, go listen to it. The whole feeling of that record is the joy of getting a second chance and actually doing something right with it. Love is lovelier, the song says, the second time around. I think about that song more than a security guy probably should, because it is honestly the truest description I have of what we are doing at Fortifye. We are not pretending we got everything perfect the first time. We did not. Nobody does. What we are doing is taking everything we learned the first time and building it again, this time with the parts we wished we had.

The first version of this concept was good. It solved a real problem and it solved it in some of the most demanding buildings in the country. But it was shaped by the tools that existed at the time. There was no mature mobile credential to lean on. GPS was not woven into the experience. AI was not sitting in the security operations center reading every event and telling an officer what mattered. So we did the best version possible with what we had, and we paid close attention to where it fell short. Where the dock still felt blind. Where a visitor still got lost. Where a guard still drowned in alerts that did not matter. We wrote all of that down, in our heads and in our practice, for years.

Then we got the chance most people never get. We got to build it again. The second time around, we did not patch the old thing. We started over with a new architecture and we let everything we had learned drive the design. The credential lives on the phone now. The arrival is guided turn by turn. The AI absorbs the routine traffic so the officer can spend attention on the exception that actually deserves it. The experience is calmer for the person arriving and sharper for the team protecting the place. That is what the song is really about, when you sit with it. Not doing it twice. Doing it better the second time because you finally understand what you are doing.

So yes, sometimes Fortifye is just plain getting it right, and the reason is not luck. It is the second time around. We carry the scar tissue of the first version into the design of this one, and that is a feature, not an apology. When somebody asks me why this platform feels different from everything that came before it, the honest answer is that we have already lived through the first attempt. We know where it bends. We know where people stumble. And we built the second version to hold all of that. Credit where it is due, to Shalamar, for putting the feeling into three minutes better than I ever could in a meeting.
